The list of reality shows Aylin Bayramoglu has auditioned for unsuccessfully is a long one: “American Idol,” “The X Factor,” “American Juniors,” “America's Got Talent,” “The Sing-Off” and “The Glee Project.” And yet, that didn't stop the Loyola Academy alum from trying out for “The Glee Project's” second season last November at McCormick Place, just like she did for the first.
“I had nothing to lose,” said Bayramoglu, 20, over the phone Thursday. Bayramoglu was majoring in vocal jazz performance at Roosevelt University at the time. “I went right after class. Something just told me to audition. I'm a very instinctual person. I'm super determined. I don't give up easily.”
Bayramoglu's persistence paid off when she was named one of the 14 “Glee Project” cast members competing for a seven-episode arc on the upcoming season of Fox's “Glee.” Though she didn't win (that honor went to 19-year-old Miami native Blake Jenner), she did advance all the way to last Tuesday's season finale.
Bayramoglu stood out in the diverse cast not only because she grew up in a traditional Turkish household, but also because of her Muslim faith. She said she prepared her mother for the more risqué storylines on “The Glee Project” so that they wouldn't come as a surprise.
“I tried to warn my mom beforehand,” Bayramoglu said. “I prepared her. ‘Mom, this week I may or may not be a lesbian. I might be pregnant.' Just stuff like that, which helped. They're all pretty proud of me and how far I got.”
Like many aspiring entertainers, Bayramoglu has now moved to Los Angeles. She lives with “Glee Project” competitor Lily Mae Harrington and plans on taking acting lessons. Asked if she will appear on “Glee” just like other “Glee Project” runners-up did last season, Bayramoglu said she has yet to be approached about a role but, not surprisingly, would be open to it.
“I hope that's still an option,” Bayramoglu said. “ If (‘Glee' co-creator) Ryan Murphy wants to put me on ‘Glee,' no problem.”
