When asked whether there was a chance he could be caught from behind, Demoria Harris scoffed.
"Naw, man, no way," the Dunbar junior running back said. "I'm a track star and I'm gonna do what I do best, and that's run."
But Harris and his teammates couldn't catch their breath Friday until the Mightymen stopped Curie on a two-point conversion try as time expired in a 28-27 victory at Lane Stadium. Curie (2-2, 0-1) scored two touchdowns in the game's final seven minutes.
Harris, who finished third in the 200-meter dash in Class 3A last season, sprung free on a sweep right for an 86-yard touchdown late in the third quarter of the Illini Red Bird contest.
Dunbar (4-0, 1-0) was down 14-6 at halftime after Curie scored two early touchdowns. The Mightymen answered in the second half, with the help of three Condors turnovers.
"(Forcing turnovers) has been our forte, especially this season," 24th-year Dunbar coach Glenn Johnson said. "If we get a short field, we're gonna capitalize."
On the Mightymen's first drive of the second half, Harris busted an end-around down the sideline for 32 yards. Quarterback Jayton Dorsey then scored on a 7-yard carry.
After a Davonte Swope fumble in Curie's red zone, Harris busted the 86-yard touchdown. Dunbar then scored on a 55-yard fake punt pass from Dorsey to Harris.
The victory kept Dunbar's undefeated season alive, as well as the chance to win the conference. Simeon, which hasn't lost in the Public League since 2008, lurks.
“We'll play for the conference (title), I believe,” Johnson said. “There's a couple things we have to correct, we'll be better when we play them. We should play them tough."
Harris has the date memorized.
"October 11," he said. "We're ready. I've been ready to play Simeon since Day 1."
