Chrysler Corp.’s domestic vehicle sales fell 3.4 percent in March from year-earlier levels–with trucks flat and cars down 8 percent– despite a dealer-incentive program designed to boost car volume.

The No. 3 automaker reported that U.S. car sales fell to 74,126 while sales of light trucks, which include mini-vans, pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles, dropped 0.2 percent to 136,389.

Chrysler’s results essentially matched expectations, analysts said.

The numbers for each of the Big Three U.S. automakers are running about 3 percent lower for March, said David Andrea of Roney & Co. in Detroit.

Honda Motor Co., the only major Japanese automaker to report Tuesday, said its overall sales declined 6.6 percent to 79,490, including the Acura luxury division.

General Motors Corp. is expected to report sales on Wednesday, with Ford Motor Co. following on Thursday.
