Theatre at the Center, the Equity company, in Munster, Ind., said Thursday it will stage the world premiere of a new musical based on the TV show "The Beverly Hillbillies."
Part of the 2014 season, "The Beverly Hillbillies: The Musical" (adapted from episodes of the show) features music and lyrics by the Chicago-based Gregg Opelka and a book by David Rodgers. It will open in Munster next July. Unusually, Theatre at the Center has programed five shows for 2014 that it claims never have been seen on Chicagoland stages, although that it not true of the holiday show, "A Christmas Memory," based on the Truman Capote short story.
That said, no Chicago theater has produced "Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash" (a new production of the infamous Broadway flop opening in February), nor "Miracle on South Division Street" (a Tom Dudzick comedy about working-class family in Buffalo, N.Y, opening May 1).
And Theatre at the Center also has programmed the first post-Broadway production of "Women of the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," another Broadway flop. Hopefully revitalized for Munster, it's slated for next fall.Copyright © 2015, RedEye
