How secretive was the filming of the new Superman reboot, “Man of Steel,” on Route 56 in Sugar Grove earlier this week?
Sean Michels, village president of Sugar Grove, was left in the dark on what exactly took place during the shoot, and has been following rumors like the rest of us for his Superman updates.
“It’s been very hush-hush,” said Michels, who drove by the filming area but didn’t visit the set. “They didn’t tell us what they were shooting or who was in the scene. We’ve only heard rumors.”
Route 56 was closed between Galena Boulevard and Route 47 for filming Monday through Wednesday in Sugar Grove, a village of about 9,000 in the Western suburbs. Traffic and spectators were kept at a distance with help from state troopers; some people attempted to catch a glimpse from a walking path in a nearby field. A few were more secretive and hid with their cameras among the bushes in the field.
“I have thorns in my socks from chasing those people,” said one security guard, who didn’t give his name. The guard added that security forced one spectator to delete his photos.
While little is known about what or who filmed in Sugar Grove (the movie is shooting under the alias “Autumn Frost,” though that cover was blown a while ago), Michels believes a tornado scene was filmed there, citing a jet engine that was brought in. Parked cars could be seen on the highway — possibly stranded due to the tornado? — as well as over-size fans. A crushed car sat on a tow truck in a nearby parking lot.
“From my experience, big action movies tend to be more secretive,” said Betsy Steinberg, managing director of the Illinois Film Office. “They have tight reigns on things and don’t want too much getting out. They don’t want it losing the excitement and mystery.”
“Man of Steel” stars Henry Cavill as Superman and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as his parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent. Amy Adams plays Lois Lane, and Michael Shannon plays villain General Zod. Costner was spotted at Sullivan’s Steakhouse in Naperville with a friend Aug. 5 and at the Cubs game and Lollapalooza Sunday. Cavill took part in a photo shoot for Men’s Health magazine July 30 in Hotel 71 in the Loop.
“Man of Steel” is scheduled to film on Main Street in Plano — about 10 miles from Sugar Grove — Aug. 22-30 and may shoot in the Western suburb on Monday. Main Street is currently open to the public and has attracted curious visitors due to its newly created film sets, including a fake 7-Eleven and Sears, but the street and all its businesses will be closed during filming. Sue Armour, owner of Hard Daze on Main Street, said the movie will film inside her bar Aug. 25.
Meanwhile, filming in downtown Chicago is expected to take place Sept. 7-17.Copyright © 2015, RedEye
