An 19-year-old man accused of killing a 5-year-old boy and his mother this summer has been charged with a third slaying in the same neighborhood last fall.
Antonio Lewis, of the 5500 block of South Winchester Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder on Thursday in connection with the shooting death of 30-year-old Brandon Johnson on Halloween.
Earlier this month he was accused of killing 5-year-old Sterling Sims and his mother, Chavonne Brown, about 2:30 a.m. on June 28.
Police say Lewis shot Sims and Brown inside their apartment in the 5300 block of South Winchester Avenue. He also tried to kill the boy’s 11-year-old brother, police said, but the gun jammed. Lewis was also charged with attempted murder.
About 9:10 p.m. on the same day Sims and Brown were killed, Lewis was found shot several times in the 2800 block of West Arthington Street in the Lawndale neighborhood. It’s not clear whether the attack on Lewis was retaliatory.
Police said Johnson may have been conducting a “narcotics transaction” when he opened the door of his apartment in the 5400 block of South Wolcott Avenue and Lewis shot him.
The sister of Johnson’s girlfriend said Johnson's two children from another relationship were inside the apartment when the shooting happened. They were not injured in the attack.
Lewis turned 19 on Friday. He remains hospitalized.
