Five people were shot, one fatally, when gunshots were fired into a lounge in the Back of the Yards neighborhood early Saturday morning, police said.
The shooting happened about 12:50 a.m., during a birthday party at Rudy's Lounge on the southeast corner of South Union Avenue and West 51st Street. Police said shots were fired through the door of the lounge from the outside, striking five people inside the lounge.
Just before the shooting, lounge security had escorted uninvited guests from the party, police said. Three men who may have been party-crashers had been at the lounge, touching women and taking beer outside to drink.
Bar staff escorted the three out of the bar, and while they were being kicked out, one of them ran back through an interior door and started shooting in the bar, police said. The gunman and the two others who had been kicked out then fled the scene, police said.
When the shots rang out near the establishment's entrance, people inside dropped to the ground, according to a man attending the party.
"I just heard like four shots, and we all went down to the floor," said the man, a 25-year-old who declined to give his name.
Police arrived on the scene soon afterward, and as he left the lounge, he saw two people lying injured near the front entrance, the man said.
Paramedics took three men to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. One of the men, who was 35, was pronounced dead at 1:38 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Authorities identified him as Elsaleem Mannie-El, of the 8100 block of South Drexel Avenue.
The other two men brought by ambulance to Stroger were a 37-year-old man, shot in the neck, and a 40-year-old man with a grazed wound to the head, police said. Their conditions were stabilized.
A woman and a man who had also been shot also took themselves to Provident Hospital after the shooting. The woman, 32, who suffered a graze wound to the neck, was transferred to Stroger, where her condition was stabilized. The man, 37, who was grazed in the arm, was treated and released.
After the shooting, a 32-year-old man was arrested after police say he attacked three officers, hitting at least one of them in the mouth, when they told him to move out of the way, police said.
Police spent several hours after the shooting at the intersection of 51st and Union, which was blocked to the public by yellow crime scene tape. Through the open door of the lounge, which occupies the first floor of a two-story brick building, roving points of green light could be seen on the inside walls, apparently projected by a disco ball.
