A 24-year-old woman who was 8 months pregnant died in a car crash Friday night in unicorporated Stickney, officials said.
Brittany Switak, of the 6500 block of West 60th Place, died along with her unborn child after her vehicle crashed on the 4900 block of South Central Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
At about 7:40 p.m. Switak was driving her Pontiac G6 northbound on Central Avenue when she hit a maibox on the northeast side of the street, said Frank Bilecki, a spokesman for the Cook County sheriff's department.
After striking the mailbox, her vehicle spun around and hit a metal pole that was located at the same corner, Bilecki said.
Witnesses and video surveillance indicated that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred, Bilecki said.
The woman and her unborn child were pronounced dead at about 8:30 p.m. at Loyola University Medical Center, officials said.
An accident reconstruction team is investigating the crash, Bilecki said. No one else was in the vehicle.
