No bail for man charged with man's murder

A judge denied bail today for a 20-year-old man already being held on one murder charge who now is accused in another slaying.

In bond court today Judge Edward Harmening entered a no bail order for Joseph Sanders, who is also known as “Noey” and is of the 2400 block of West 35th Street.

Sanders is accused of fatally shooting 27-year-old Joseph Cepeda and wounding 21-year-old Ricardo Ramos on April 21, 2012, in the 2400 block of West 34th Place on the Southwest Side, prosecutors said.

Sanders was already in custody and being held without bail in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Taylor Diorio, who lived in Chicago Ridge. Sanders is accused of shooting her from a 2nd floor window –- hitting her in the head in the same Southwest Side neighborhood, in the 2400 block of West 35th Street -- on Aug. 18, 2012, authorities said.

In court today, Asst. State’s Attorney Melissa Samp said Cepeda and Ramos were seated in the third row of a blue Kia Sedona minivan that was parked on the street at the 34th Place address at 1:25 p.m. when a silver SUV traveled toward the Kia. The silver SUV driver threw it into reverse when it got within three to four car lengths away and turned into an alley.

About five minutes later, witnesses heard three to four gunshots and saw Sanders at the basketball court on the north side of 34th Place with his arm extended, firing a gun at the Kia minivan, Samp said.

One bullet shattered the rear driver’s side window and one hit near the gas tank, leaving Cepeda shot in the head and Ramos in the right thigh, according to Samp.

Sanders was seen fleeing the scene with another unknown person, and entering the silver SUV parked around the corner.

There was video surveillance showing a person who matched Sanders’ description and the unknown male enter the SUV. Additionally, video footage from a red light camera captured the silver SUV before and after the shooting. A witness saw Sanders run through a gangway after the shooting, according to Samp.

The motorist in the Kia drove Cepeda and Ramos to Saint Anthony Hospital, where Cepeda died on April 29, 2012 as a result of the shooting, Samp said.
