The Jane Addams Tollway has reopened after a multi-vehicle crash closed all westbound lanes of traffic for several hours today near Hampshire in Kane County.
No life-threatening injuries occurred, authorities said, though at least two people from the crash were treated at an area hospital and released.
State police said the driver of a pickup truck lost control and crashed into a temporary concrete median barrier in a construction zone on I-90 near U.S. Highway 20, about 15 miles northwest of Elgin. The pickup was struck by a tractor-trailer, starting a chain reaction collision involving five vehicles in all, said Illinois State Trooper Michelle Kistulinec.
The driver of the pickup, Robert A. Nelson, was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Kistulinec said. She did not know his age and hometown. He was cited for improper lane usage, according to a state police press release.
A spokeswoman at Sherman Hospital in Elgin said two people from the crash were treated there for minor injuries; it wasn’t clear if they included Nelson.
All the five drivers involved were wearing seat belts, authorities said.
Westbound lanes were shut down for about six hours while responders transported victims and cleared the wreckage, causing massive traffic backups and a detour onto Route 20.
