A 74-year-old business owner from Lombard was arrested and charged today with trying to hire someone to kill another business owner who had won an $8.2 million civil judgment from him, FBI officials said.
The man, Daniel Dvorkin, is the owner of Dan Development Limited, 1 Trans Am Plaza in Oakbrook Terrace.
He was arrested in his office today and charged with solicitation to commit murder-for-hire, a felony, according to a press release issued by the FBI.
Officials said that Dvorkin approached someone in April and indicated that he had been ordered by a DuPage County judge to pay an $8.2 million civil judgment and that he did not want to pay, officials said.
At the time, he told the alleged killer that he wanted the victim, the co-owner of another company, to "stop breathing." He then told the intended killer that he had $100,000 to pay for the murder, officials said. Dvorkin then gave the intended killer documents that identified the victim, according to the FBI.
But rather then go through with the plot the intended killer informed police and FBI officials about the deed. The intended killer then began cooperating with officials and including having conversations with Dvorkin recorded, the FBI said.
Dvorkin appeared before U.S. Magistrate Young B. Kim where he was ordered held without bond. Another hearing is scheduled for Friday, officials said.
