'Hunchback Variations' headed to New York

"The Hunchback Variations," the two-person Theatre Oobleck production starring George Andrew Wolff and Larry Adams, is headed Off-Broadway to the 59E59 Theatre (59 E. 59th St.) in New York. The first performance in June 1; opening night is planned for June 6.

The 85-minute piece, which premiered at the Richard Christiansen Theatre in Chicago in January and played for about nine weeks, has a book by Mickle Maher (based on his play) and music by Mark Messing; it falls somewhere between an opera and a theater piece and deals with the relationship between Quasimodo (played by Adams) and Ludwig van Beethoven (played by Wolff).

"I thought nothing would ever come of this," said Wolff. "But it turned into this crazy thing where people laugh and wipe away tears from their eyes."

Wolff is currently in "Hairspray" at the Drury Lane Theatre; this will be his first New York gig.
