George Wendt is leaving the cast of "The Odd Couple" for medical reasons.
The longtime Chicago improviser, best known for playing the role of Norm on television's "Cheers," checked into the hospital Sunday evening with chest pains, the Northlight Theatre in Skokie reported Tuesday.
Wendt "is getting medical attention and will eventually make a full recovery," theater executive director Timothy Evans said in a statement.
Wendt and fellow Second City alum Tim Kazurinsky were to costar as Oscar and Felix in the production. According to the theater, Wendt's role will be filled by Marc Grapey, who was already in the "Odd Couple" cast as Murray, and who was previously in a Broadway production with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. "The Odd Couple" will begin previews Friday as scheduled, officially opening Nov. 9.
