An Evanston man died after his car crashed into a tree in Skokie late this morning, possibly following a heart attack, officials said.
Irving Yaross, 89, of the 300 block of Darrow Avenue in Evanston, was declared dead at 11:50 a.m. at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Yaross was awake and alert when emergency crews first arrived at Dempster Street west of McCormick Boulevard, but went into cardiac arrest after he was put on a backboard stretcher, according to a release from Skokie police.
Skokie Fire Department crews responded to the scene about 11 a.m. and found a car had hit a parkway tree on the north side of Dempster, police said. The car apparently was headed east on Dempster when it crossed into oncoming lanes and hit the tree.
After he was placed on the stretcher and went into cardiac arrest, the driver was taken to St. Francis.
Road conditions were not believed to have contributed to the crash, police said.
An autopsy for Yaross was expected to be performed on Saturday.
