An Elgin man was sentenced to 40 days in the Kane County jail after pleading guilty to animal neglect charges Tuesday.
Robert A. Shilling, 38, was one of four adults charged after authorities found them living with nine dogs and two young children in unsanitary conditions at a house in the 600 block of Lavoie Avenue.
As part of a negotiated plea, Shilling agreed to forfeit ownership of seven of the dogs. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty, violation of ownership duties and failing to have the dogs vaccinated for rabies.
Police entered the residence late last month after receiving complaints of strong odors emanating from inside. They found dog feces all over the house, and one officer was physically sickened by the smell, police said.
Two women and another man who lived at the residence are scheduled to appear in court later this week on animal and child neglect charges.
The dogs were removed and taken to an animal hospital, and two children living in the house were placed with relatives, police said.
The city of Elgin, which bars more than three dogs in a residence, condemned the house.Copyright © 2015, RedEye
