You probably won’t understand most of what is being said in the trailer for the Bollywood film, “Dhoom 3,” released today, but you will recognize several of the locations featured in the nearly three minute video.
The third movie in the buddy cop, action franchise – which revolves around a supercop and his joke-cracking sidekick -- is set in Chicago and filmed here from August to November last year. The slow motion-heavy trailer includes shots of Navy Pier’s Ferris Wheel, Cloud Gate (aka “The Bean”) and Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, Lower Wacker Drive and Lake Shore Drive, not to mention the outside of the Tribune building (45 second mark).
Why did the producers of the film decide to move the movie all the way to Chicago?
“The producers saw Chicago in other blockbuster films (Transformers 3, Dark Knight, etc) and thought it would provide a great new look for a South Asian audience,” said Chicago Film Office director Rich Moskal by email. “And based on the action performed in those films, they felt confident that the city could provide the support required for staging their high-action stunts and chase sequences.”
"Dhoom 3" contributed $9.5 million to the local economy, according to the Illinois Film Office.
From what I’ve read about the movie and have seen in the trailer and teaser, the storyline is still somewhat of a mystery. I was, however, able to gather that the protagonists are trying to capture our bowler hat-wearing friend (played by Bollywood mega-star Aamir Khan), who is the villain in the third film. Makes sense. I would’ve had a really hard time pulling for a guy who wears a shirt with no sleeves under a vest.
“Dhoom 3” hits theaters in India in December.
