Boy, 14, held in custody in sex assault, robbery of teen girl

A 14-year-old boy was ordered held in custody today, charged with sexually assaulting and robbing a 16-year-old girl in the West Englewood neighborhood this week, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office.

Because he is a juvenile, police declined to identify the suspect, who is cited with aggravated criminal sexual assault and armed robbery. Police originally had said he was 15, but he is 14, said state's attorney's spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.

In a hearing today before Juvenile Court Judge Stuart Katz today, the boy was ordered held in juvenile custody, pending a hearing March 8, Simonton said.

A male she does not know, armed with a gun, confronted the girl and forced her into a gangway in the 6300 block of South Paulina Street at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

She was sexually assaulted and robbed of money and an iPod, officials said.

After the attack, the girl was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where her condition had stabilized, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody Wednesday, but details of the arrest were not released.
