You normally wouldn't expect to see too many jocks at a comic book convention. But with the Bears' Lance Briggs and Israel Idonije each launching comic books in recent years, it was only a matter of time before their teammates became at least a little bit curious about comic culture.
Martellus Bennett, Kyle Long, Nate Collins, Shea McClellin, Austen Lane and ex-Bear Anthony “Spice” Adams were on hand Saturday for C2E2 at McCormick Place, where Idonije was promoting his comic, “The Protectors.”
“(Idonije) invited me, so any time a teammate has something going on I try to support them,” Bennett said. “I'm taking it all in. Just enjoying the experience. I watch a lot of these shows. I like ‘Adventure Time.' I like ‘Walking Dead.' I play ‘Halo.' I just met some of the ‘Halo' guys. I'm a big fan of Wolverine.”
Guests at C2E2 approached the players for photos, as you would expect, and the players, in some cases, approached guests for photos.
Bennett posted a photo of a guest dressed in a Wolverine costume on his Instagram account, as well as one of a guest dressed as Spider-Man nemesis Venom. Long posted a photo on Twitter of himself with a guest dressed as Bumblebee from “Transformers,” which currently serves as his Twitter profile picture. But it wasn't just superheroes that the Bears players were interested in.
“Best part at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment (Expo) today: Hanging out with the Bob's Burgers family!” Lane tweeted along with a photo of himself with guests dressed as characters from the Fox cartoon.
Lane, it should be noted, admits on his Twitter bio: “I was a band geek.”
