"The Addams Family," which played its pre-Broadway tryout in Chicago, has cut its reprise engagement over the upcoming Christmas season from three weeks down to one.
The show will now play the Cadillac Palace Theatre for just one week, from Dec. 27 to Jan. 1. Broadway in Chicago said Friday morning that subscriber exchanges will be available, along with refunds for those who purchased tickets for the cancelled weeks.
"The Addams Family" has been extensively revised for its tour, which opened in Louisiana earlier this fall, with some songs cut and others added. But ticket demand in Chicago, where many people already saw the show in 2009, is evidently soft. The show on Broadway announced in August it will close there on Dec. 31.
There is growing evidence the recession is extracting a toll on Broadway musicals. On Thursday, the producers of the revival of "Funny Girl," scheduled for next spring in New York, announced they had postponed the project indefinitely after failing to raise the $12 million capitalization.
