Two men were killed in an apparent drive-by shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood Thursday afternoon. Six other people were wounded in five other incidents overnight.
The men, both 20, were in the 5300 block of South Hoyne Avenue when they were shot in an apparent drive-by attack a little before 5 p.m., said Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala, citing preliminary information.
One of the men was shot in the head and was dead at the scene. He was identified as William Herron-Junius, of the 6900 block of South Lowe Avenue.
The other man was wounded in the chest and taken in critical condition to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he later died, authorities said. He was identified as Lamont Matticx, of the 2100 block of West 54th Place.
Zala said detectives were still gathering information, but preliminary reports indicated the shooting was gang-related.
In other violent incident overnight in the city:
-- A 36-year-old man was shot in the Chatham neighborhood about 1:30 a.m. He was in the 300 block of East 75th Street when someone shot him in the foot, police said. He turned up at the University of Chicago Hospital, police said.
-- A 14-year-old boy was shot on the 7900 block of South Loomis Boulevard in the Brainerd neighborhood just before 1 a.m. He was walking when he was shot in the back and walked into St. Bernard Hospital, police said. His condition was stable.
-- About 20 minutes earlier, a 20-year-old man was shot in the 4100 block of South Ellis Avenue in the Oakland neighborhood. He was wounded in the upper left torso andwas in critical condition at Stroger Hospital, police said. Several men or boys shot at him, police said.
-- About 11:30 p.m. Thursday, a 45-year-old man was shot while taking out the trash in the 200 block of West 105th Street in the Fernwood neighborhood, police said. He heard shots and felt pain, police said. He was stable at Advocate Christ Medical Center, police said.
-- Two others were wounded in a separate attack in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood about 9 p.m. Thursday, police said. The two were shot in the 6400 block of South Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood, police said.
An 18-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg and a 24-year-old man was shot in the right forearm. Both were stable.
