One of two teenage boys charged in the fatal shooting of two brothers in Gary on Sunday is still at large, police said tonight.
Johnte Crawford, 17, was arrested soon after Charles Wood, 18, and his brother Shaqwone Ham, 19, were found fatally shot in the 2500 block of West 13th Avenue in Gary, a little before 4 p.m. Sunday, according to police.
Crawford has not yet appeared in court, and Donnell D. Wilson, 16, is still at large, but also has been charged with murder and armed robbery in the slaying, according to police and court records.
Police tell WGN-TV that neither of the brothers had run-ins with police and they did not have gang affiliation.
Ham and Wood were on their way to their grandmother’s house for dinner when they were shot, family told WGN-TV.
Police have said they are not certain of the motive in the slayings, and that the two charged in the slayings knew the brothers. But family told WGN-TV they believe the teens were robbery victims and police say that 10 minutes before the brothers were shot, Crawford and Wilson, both of Gary, robbed a boy just two blocks away at gunpoint, in the 2500 block of West 15th Avenue.
The victim told police that he saw three men or boys and a girl walking along and two of them crossed the street toward him, according to an affidavit filed in the case. One, later identified as Crawford, held a revolver on him while the other, later identified as Wilson, snatched his headphones off his head, and they had him drop his cell phone and remove his clothes.
Wilson then showed a silver handgun and the two robbers told the boy to run, according to the affidavit. A few minutes later, the boy heard shots.
Crawford, Wilson and the other boy and the girl went to 13th Avenue, and came upon Ham and Wood, according to the affidavit. Ham and Wood walked up to Crawford and Wilson, and after they spoke for a minute, Crawford and Wilson pulled out their guns.
Wilson shot Wood in the head, and when Ham tried to run, Crawford shot him in bushes near a home, according to the affidavit.
The boy and girl with Crawford and Wilson ran off to the girl’s house, with Crawford and Wilson close behind, and Wilson left the home soon after.
Police were called and found Wood’s body in the middle of the street on 13th Avenue, and found Ham in the bushes. Ham, who had been shot in the chest and buttocks, was declared dead on the scene, and Wood, who was shot in the head, was taken to the hospital and died Monday, according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office.
Police did not have photographs of either suspect available, a Gary police spokeswoman said.
