A man died after he drove his car around lowered crossing gates and it was hit by a Metra train and carried down the track in Lake Forest Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The man, age 35, was dead when paramedics found him in the car following the crash about 1:23 p.m. just west of Waukegan Road at Old Mill Road in the north suburb, officials said.
The car was carried about 100 yards south on the track following the crash, Lake Forest Police said in a news release.
Witnesses told investigators that the black sedan was headed east on Old Mill Road when the warning lights and bells were triggered and the gates lowered as the train approached, according to the release. The car went around the lowered gate, continued east and was hit by the train.
The man's identity was not yet being released as of about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
No one on the train was believed injured, said Lake Forest Deputy Fire Chief Christopher Garrison.
The train involved, Milwaukee District-North Line train No. 2612, was headed for Chicago from Fox Lake at the time of the crash, said Metra spokesman Tom Miller.
