U.S. government agencies are closer to elimination of the Year 2000 computer bug, although key departments, including the Defense Department, are still making insufficient progress, the Office of Management and Budget said Friday.

Half of the so-called “mission critical” government systems are Y2K compliant, up from 40 percent in May, OMB said. Nine of 24 agencies received favorable ratings.

The OMB quarterly report on Year 2000 readiness tracks the performance of government agencies in replacing or repairing critical computer systems.

The Year 2000 bug–which could result in crippled computer systems–is a glitch in which computers and software use only the last two digits of any year, meaning they can’t tell the difference between 1900 and 2000.
