Between making minimum credit card payments and meeting student loan obligations, you’re living paycheck to paycheck.

You know you need to stop charging and create a family budget.

But a money expert suggests you also take a holistic approach, by using changes in your thought patterns to spur changes in your spending.

Begin by developing a positive belief system about money and moving beyond negative childhood experiences regarding money, Glinda Bridgforth, an Oakland, Calif., financial manager, advises in the September issue of Essence magazine.

Other suggestions:

– Boost your self-esteem. The way you handle money is a direct reflection of how you feel about yourself. Repeat these affirmations: “I am enough, I have enough, I know enough, I do enough,” Bridgforth says.

– Each morning, make a personal committment to make an effort to stop adding to your debt.

– Set a target date for being debt-free and (budgeted) reward to strive for.
